St. Joseph's College Nainital was established in 1888. The site was the location of a seminary, run by the Italian Capuchin Fathers. The seminary ran for a short while and then reopened as a Catholic school for boys: St. Joseph's College. The school is still referred to as "SEM" (for Seminary). In 1892 four Christian Brothers took formal charge of St. Joseph's College and thus began the involvement of the Christian Brothers in the running of the school.

On the 17th day of January, 2012 our Trust for Sem, officially named as above, was set up and duly registered at Haldwani with its Registered Office at St. Joseph’s College Nain ital. On 19th Jan the Bank account of the Trust was opened with state Bank of India Nainital.

Rationale
Being a Sem student has always been a matter of privilege and pride. Sem alumni all over the world have in their various fields been a testimony to the excellent education, training and upbringing provided by the School.
In recent times, however, all those who have been concerned about the welfare of the institution have been feeling that the challenges posed by societal changes, technological upheaval etc. have been on the increase and the school would need all the support it could get from well-wishers to maintain its premier position.
One of the prime objectives of the Christian Brothers organization is to serve the community in which they function. In accordance with this aim they have shied away from purely commercial considerations and have always endeavoured to keep the school fees etc. at an affordable level. Even today the annual expense for a boarder in Sem is of the order of Rs. 150,000/- and for that of a day-scholar it is around Rs. 27,000/-. For this, besides the regular tuition, children get all the various facilities that Sem has to offer including 6 playing fields, tennis, badminton, basketball and squash courts, swimming pool, gym, billiards, T.T to name only a few. The boarders get eggs for breakfast each day and a non-vegetarian meal twice or thrice a week. It is also ensured that they get timely and regular medical attention.
Any comparison with what good schools today are charging will convince anyone of the reasonableness of Sem’s fee structure.
How then are the twin ( and somewhat contradictory ) objectives of a) excellent/outstanding academic and co-curricular facilities and b) reasonableness and affordability of charges, to be met? This is where the Trust feels it can step in. Fortunately, there exists a large pool of well-placed alumni who have a deep sense of gratitude and who are willing to give back to their alma mater in substantial measure provided they are convinced that their contribution will reach the right place. The Trust presents itself as the ideal and most credible vehicle for channelizing this sense of gratitude and concern for the continuing progress of the institution. To put it succinctly, the Trust aims to serve the entire Sem community, consisting of past and present students, teachers and staff, by bringing them together so that their unified and well-directed efforts uplift the community as a whole.
